The Blurb

Two childhoods destroyed.
One story they will never tell.
Until now.

Beth ran away from her family when she was a teenager. She left behind a terrible evil that took her innocence. She also left behind her sister, Sara.

When Beth returns home, she is shocked to discover her terrible secret is not just hers alone…she shares it with Sara. Under the shadow of a remote headland, the sisters make an oath they promise never to break.

Eva’s birth is a mystery that remains unsolved. Years later with her marriage in ruins, and her future uncertain, she realizes that to move forward with her life, she must first understand her past.

But while Eva is drawing closer to the truth about her roots, Beth and Sara’s lives are falling apart, crushed under the weight of the secret they carry. They must confront the past and face the darkness once more. But this time, their story will be heard.

My Thoughts

Well, I suppose the good run had to finish somewhere. Unfortunately this book wasn’t for me. It’s a dark, emotional subject to read about and not one I shy from but I just found myself drifting off, I wasn’t submersed into the world Laura Elliot has created. The language and long sentence structure made it feel like an old novel and it put me off. I suppose I Just wasn’t the demographic this novel was aimed at.

Book 21 - The Missing - C.L. Taylor

Kindle Edition

Cost: NetGallery

Publisher: Avon

Published: 07/04/16

Amazon uk link: Here

Goodreads Link: Here

The Blurb

You love your family. They make you feel safe. You trust them.
But should you…?
When fifteen-year-old Billy Wilkinson goes missing in the middle of the night, his mother, Claire, blames herself. She's not the only one. There isn't a single member of Billy's family that doesn't feel guilty. But the Wilkinson’s are so used to keeping secrets from one another that it isn't until six months later, after an appeal for information goes horribly wrong, that the truth begins to surface.
Claire is sure of two things – that Billy is still alive and that her friends and family had nothing to do with his disappearance.
A mother's instinct is never wrong. Or is it?
Sometimes those closest to us are the ones with the most to hide…

My Thoughts

I think after this one I am going to read something a little less stressful. Or not. I seem to have hit a streak of amazing books at the moment and this certainly continued with The Missing. At the risk of a copy and paste from previous reviews, I have said before that for me to really enjoy a book, and give it 5 stars I need to be inside the book. I need to feel the same things as the character and again with The Missing I did.

For the majority of the book I was tense, so tense it gave me a headache. I felt so sorry for Claire. Poor women didn’t know what the hell was going on, waking up here, there and everywhere. Not knowing if she was involved in her sons disappearance. Everyone she loved became a suspect in her mind, its no wonder her brain reacted the way it did.
It’s an evenly paced book with short chapter s and a cracking storyline with an ending that I completely got wrong.

Without giving too much away, I thought Billy was a little so and so and I’m glad it ended how it did. Oh, and it’s the first time I have cried whilst reading. The last chapter was heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.

Book 20 - See How They Run - Tom Bale

The Blurb

How far would you go to save your family?

In the dead of night, new parents Alice and Harry French are plunged into their worst nightmare when they wake to find masked men in their bedroom. Men ruthless enough to threaten their baby daughter, Evie.

This is no burglary gone wrong.
The intruders know who they’re looking for – a man called Edward Renshaw.
And they are prepared to kill to get to him.

When the men leave empty handed, little do Alice and Harry realise that their nightmare is just beginning. Is it a case of mistaken identity? Who is Renshaw? And what is he hiding?

One thing is clear – they already know too much.

As Alice and Harry are separated in the run for their lives, there is no time for breathe in their fight to be reunited. And with their attackers closing in, there is only a choice:

STAY ALIVE. OR DON’T.

My Thoughts

I truly believe that Bookouture are becoming one of the best Publishers of the Crime/Thrillers genre, they have some amazing talent and Tom Bale is without doubt one of the best.

Reading this book was like getting on a treadmill turning it on and finding that it is on full speed, you can’t stop it and when the timer stops it, you collapse in a heap exhausted. Right from the first chapter you are taken into a world full of suspense, tension and fast paced action.

Through every chapter my heart beat raised, I held my breath and felt the pain, hope and disappointment and that both Alice and Harry French were going through. I have never felt as involved in a book as this one.

You don’t get to know who Harrys’ favourite Spice girl is or any other superfluous background to the characters; it’s just a massive joy ride of an adventure.

Although I did receive this book for an honest review, I would buy it in Paperback and keep it to read over and over again.

Don’t make the mistake of starting this in bed, I did and ended up checking the doors were locked at 2am and hiding a hammer under my pillow.

Book 19 - The Silent Twin - Caroline Mitchell

Kindle Edition

Publisher: Bookouture

Published: 14/04/16

The Blurb

I’m alone in the dark, please can you find me …

Nine-year-old twins Abigail and Olivia vow never to be parted. But when Abigail goes missing from Blackwater Farm, DC Jennifer Knight must find her before it’s too late.

Twin sister Olivia has been mute since Abigail’s disappearance. But when she whispers in Jennifer’s ear, Jennifer realises it is Abigail’s voice pleading to be found.

A damp and decaying house set in acres of desolate scrubland, the farm is a place of secrets, old and new – and Jennifer must unravel them all in order to find the lost girl. But could Olivia’s bond with her twin hold the key to finding Abigail? And can Jennifer break through her silence in time to save her sister’s life?

A darkly gripping, page-turning thriller that will enthrall fans of Rachel Abbott, Alex Marwood’s The Wicked Girls and Mark Edwards.

My Thoughts

Well, what do you know, she’s only gone and done it again. This book was a truly great trip into the unknown. At some points I was holding my breath waiting to see what happened and importantly the ending was pretty decent with no plot holes or loose ends.

Its an cliché that’s very over used, and I make no apology for using it, this book was a “page turner” of the highest quality. What I want from a book is emotions. I want to be in the story, I want to see the characters in my mind, I want the story to exist.

Caroline Mitchells’ writing took me on a dark, suspenseful rollercoaster of a story that took me to the town of Haven threw me around a bit and them dumped me back into my armchair. Loved it.

The Blurb

You think you know who to trust? You think you know the difference between good and evil?
You’re wrong …
A LESSON YOU WILL NEVER FORGET
The body of the head teacher of an exclusive Devon school is found hanging from the rafters in the assembly hall.
Hours earlier he’d received a package, and only he could understand the silent message it conveyed. It meant the end.
As Exeter suffers a rising count of gruesome deaths, troubled DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles must solve the case and make their city safe again.
But as they’re drawn into a network of corruption, lies and exploitation, every step brings them closer to grim secrets hidden at the heart of their community.
And once they learn what’s motivating this killer, will they truly want to stop him?
SMART. GRIPPING. GRUESOME.
This is a psychological crime thriller in a class of its own.
WARNING: Most definitely *not* for the faint-hearted!

My Thoughts

This has been the hardest review I have had to write. I really enjoyed this book and the Author quite clearly has a talent for telling a good story but there was also so much I didn't take to.

Some of the writing was exquisite, especially the rape storyline. I felt every emotion, of both Abbey and her Father, and thought it was spot on, but it was a distraction from the main plot and should have been a book on its own.

Chapter 29. I have a big problem with Chapter 29. I read it 3 times to see what I had missed but each time didn’t get it at all. I saw no reason for it except padding out the word count.

I liked the relationship between DS Adrian Miles and DS Imogen Grey and thought they were under used to move the story along. Lastly, The two sex scenes were horrendous and totally unneeded especially at half a chapter each.

I would also have a word with the PR people, I did feel a bit let down with the gore content. I was expecting the book to be more like a UK version of a Chris Carter book. Maybe I have a high gore level.

Overall though I did enjoy the book and look forward to reading more from Katerina Diamond.

The Blurb

A man enters the culverted remains of an ancient Glasgow stream. Deep below the city it is decaying and claustrophobic, and gets more so with every step. As the ceiling lowers to no more than a couple of feet above the ground, he finds his path blocked by another person. But the person is has been murdered.
DS Narey leads the investigation to find who the victim is and who killed him. Photographer Winter begins an investigation of his own, through the shadowy world of urbexers, people who pursue a dangerous and illegal hobby, a world that Winter knows more about than he lets on.
Meanwhile, DI Derek Addison is trying to prevent an escalating drugs war which has already left several casualties in its wake among the city's rival gangs. A new face in town is upsetting the established order.
Against a backdrop of hauntingly atmospheric and dangerous buildings, the tangled links between the gangs and the urbexers who have strayed unwittingly into deadly territory draw all three investigations together.

My Thoughts

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway.

I enjoyed this book and despite being part of a series, it read well as a standalone. Honestly, I had never heard of this series of books before or indeed the Author, so I approached this blind without even reading the blurb.

The plot was a good one and it flowed flawlessly and right from the first page I knew this was going to be a good book. When I read I always visualise it and almost always use actors I see on the Tv. For this one it was the Silent Witness cast and If you want a TV comparison I would say thats a fair one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and its closer to a 5 than a 4, there was just something I
couldn't put my finger on that stopped it being a 5. I look forward to reading much more of
Craig Robertsons writing.

Book 16 - White Is the Coldest Colour - John Nicholl

Kindle Edition

Cost: 1.99

Publisher: Booktrope

Goodreads Link: Here

The Blurb

Be careful who you trust...

The Mailer family are oblivious to the terrible danger that enters their lives when seven-year-old Anthony is referred to the child guidance service by the family GP following the breakdown of his parents' marriage. Fifty-eight year old Dr David Galbraith, a sadistic predatory paedophile employed as a consultant child psychiatrist, has already murdered one child in the soundproofed cellar below the South Wales Georgian town-house he shares with his wife and two young daughters. Anthony becomes Galbraith’s latest obsession, and he will stop at nothing to make his grotesque fantasies reality.
The novel is entirely fictional, but draws on John Nicholl's experiences as a police officer, child protection social worker, manager and trainer.
During his career the author was faced with case after case that left him incredulous as to the harm sexual predators chose to inflict on their victims. The book reflects that reality.
The story is set in 1992, a more naive time when many found it extremely difficult to believe that a significant number of adults posed a serious risk to children.
The book contains material some may find upsetting from the start.
It is dedicated to survivors everywhere

My Thoughts

Without doubt this is the worst book I have ever read. The plot is a good one but the execution is truly awful. If you take away the words Bitch, Bastard and Cariad then the word count would be halved. one dimensional, Repetitive, monotonous and a quite astoundingly poor ending.

Goodreads Link:Here

The Blurb

When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not
only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past. In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight, and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.

My Bit

Starts off well enough, Breezy is a well written character with a good personality but then she comes across a myriad of other "monsters" and equally as nasty humans and the story takes a different path and becomes one hell of a slog. The whole monster thing did nothing for me and left way too many unanswered questions and I couldn't see any purpose to it. The last few chapters were good with an acceptable ending but it made the middle bit even more pointless.

The Blurb

The girl emerged from the woods, barely alive. Her story was beyond belief. But it was true.
Every dreadful word of it.
Days later, another desperate escapee is found - and a pattern is emerging. Pairs of victims are being abducted, imprisoned then faced with a terrible choice: kill or be killed.
Would you rather lose your life or lose your mind?
Detective Inspector Helen Grace has faced down her own demons on her rise to the top. As she leads the investigation to hunt down this unseen monster, she learns that it may be the survivors - living calling cards - who hold the key to the case. And unless she succeeds, more innocents will die . . .
Introducing M. J. Arlidge's Detective Inspector Helen Grace, Eeny Meeny is an electrifying début, with the nerve-shredding intensity of Saw and Along Came a Spider. Fans of James Patterson and Mo Hayder should pay attention.

My Thoughts

I know I am pretty late discovering MJ Arlidge and his Helen Grace books, as this came out in 2014 and the 5th in the series comes out in a few days, but my god am I glad I did. I loved this book right from the start and couldnt get enough, I HAD to read more and more. Helen Grace is a fantastic creation and the writing just sucks you in to the book as though you are there. They cost a bit more than I would normally want to pay but they are worth it. Looks like I will be raiding the Piggy Bank for the rest of the series.

As D.C. Jennifer Knight investigates a routine stabbing in the quiet town of Haven, she is shocked at what seems like a personal message from beyond the grave.

When more bodies are found, Jennifer is convinced the killings are somehow linked. What she discovers is more chilling than she could possibly imagine. The murders mirror those of the notorious Grim Reaper – from over twenty years ago. A killer her mother helped convict.

Jennifer can no longer ignore the personal connection. Is there a copycat killer at work? Was the wrong man convicted? Or is there something more sinister at play …

With her mother’s terrifying legacy spiralling out of control, Jennifer must look into her own dark past in a fight not only to stop a killer – but to save herself and those she loves.

My Thoughts

It took me a while to get into this story as I didn't read the blurb about it before I started reading and im kind of glad I didn't because at the moment Paranormal isn't my "thing", I go through phases, and I probably wouldn't of read it if I had.

I really enjoyed it once I got into it and I really liked Jennifer Knight. It was a good story that flowed and read well with a good ending and more importantly for me, one I didn't see coming. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
